Pickman 2

by Pickers Games

An interesting twist on Pac-man clones...

Story
Ms. Pickman has lost her memory, and Pickman needs to collect as many gold nuggests to remind her that he loves her. How far will he have to go?
Game Design: 80%
The game greets you with a nice menu where you can check the story or play the game. You can enter a password to start at any level you left off at from a previous gaming session, which I think is a good thing. Also, the game remembers where you were when you get a game over so you don't have to worry about having to enter passwords each time you lose. You can also start over from the beginning if you want to.
As for the game itself it plays similar to Pac-man, but there are no power pellets. This game reminded me of JdR's Pac-man clone in that the AI goes after you relentlessly, so the real enemy is the level design. You have to try to draw in the enemy so you can trap him in a corner or at least to buy you time to get to the gold nuggets. Some of the 8 levels are harder than others, but the ability to edit your own levels is cool.
If there are any problems here it is with a minor bug. I am not sure what causes it, but for some reason I couldn't read the story once I started the game. It would skip past it for no reason. I can read it if I just don't start the actual game, but it was a weird bug.
Since it didn't affect gameplay at all, it won't affect this score much. For the most part this game was pretty flawless and it had a simple design that worked well for it.
Graphics: 75%
The intros and stills looked really well done, and the game graphics looked pretty good too. The bricks in this game actually looked like bricks, and the enemies looked pretty cool too. There was some variety of the enemies so it didn't get boring, although there was no animation. When Pickman gets captured though, you see the screen turn red and the game over screen comes up, which looked pretty wicked in itself. Pickman is a yellow, squarish face...B-) I like smilies....
Play Control: 70%
You basically move around the maze, like any Pac-man clone. The controls were a little tricky at times, but for the most part they worked fine, especially once you get the hang of it.
Sound: 55%
The computers I tried this game on didn't support the sound, but I was able to play the lone MIDI provided. Basically, it plays the The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time's Windmill music throughout the game. The MIDI did seem to be poor quality but it is still interesting that the game had this nice campy music.
Challenge: 75%
While there is no way to destroy the enemies, avoiding them is the key. Some of the levels provided allow you to do so easily, but on others you need to think a bit and try to draw the enemies towards you so you can lead them out of the way of the nuggets.
It is the tiniest bit frustrating at first, but you get the hang of it and it becomes enjoyable.
Satisfaction/Fun: 75%
I liked it. Plain and simple. The simplicity of the game itself makes it so fun. I would have enjoyed it more if there were some more levels provided, but the taste of the game's 8 levels was decent enough. The graphics helped because the fluid motion of Pickman made it seem like the game itself was smoothly done. There were no incredible frustrations due to controls so you can enjoy the game and try to get past the enemies. While the story could use some work, you could have played this game without actually reading it.
Overall: 74.50%
Smooth graphics, simplistic gameplay, and decent levels. This game could use more of the levels, but for the most part it is good. You can of course make your own levels anyway, but if you don't want to or don't have the time it might feel like this game is way too short. I suggest this game to those who like Pac-man clones, but I warn you that it might not be that involving.
