Mysterious Song

by DarkDread

An RPG in the style of the Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior series.

Story
You are Spear, a newly trained Toren Knight. The monsters are out in force, more than usual. The king needs you to go find help from another knight and a magician. Both of you find that the source of the monsters is the Tower of Gods, which is where your quest takes you.
Game Design: 75%
An RPG in the same design as Final Fantasy in almost all aspects! The menu system, the graphics, even some of the spells seem to be based on Final Fantasy II and III. I found a lot of familiar things in this game, such as the destroyed town from Dragon Warrior. Of course, there are some original ideas also, but that is simply what makes this game different. Nothing too special.
Unfortunately, the game does not exactly point you in the right direction. In order to get to the Tower of Gods, you will need to remove a mountain that separates the continent. No one tells you to do so, and there is no indication that you should or which mountain it is. You just accidentally find out. Besides that, the game is pretty much an experience earning one. More time is spent earning experience and gold than exploring the game. The map is not that big so there is hardly anything to explore anyway, but still.
The story seems to promise a few twists. I like that.
Basically the design of this game could use a little work, but it is good for what it is.
Graphics: 80%
Pretty good. From the intro to the overhead view to the battles (especially the battles!), the graphics are fairly well done. Remember Final Fantasy III, where the backgrounds were digitized graphics? The battle scenes will remind you of that. The rest of the game looks like Dragon Warrior with the different tiles and such. There is barely any animation though, which would have been nice. Sometimes there are cut scenes where the story works itself out. It is basically like the cut scenes in Final Fantasty and Dragon Warrior.
Overall, I thought the graphics were pretty good.
Play Control: 65%
Understandably this game was not designed for a really fast processor. There are different scrolling speeds for those with faster or slower computers. Either there was no real design to it other than changing the wait time, or there was no speed setting created for 800MHz. Too bad since if you have a computer that fast you spend a lot of time trying to get your character to walk only one tile instead of two. It can be annoying, especially if you enter a new area and are about to die. Those few extra steps can cost your party's life, or that really good item you just found. If you press the keys lightly, you can do it, but it can be difficult and even painful after playing for awhile.
Other than that, the controls are simple, although could be improved. There is no option to parry or take back a move in a fight, which is unfortunate.
Sound: 85%
Beautiful original score, with slight static, but still pretty good. The music is pretty good in this game. You have to hear it to understand. The only problem is that you are more likely to enter into a battle than to hear more than the intro for a song. I found that the music can get kind of catchy if you stay in one spot for awhile, but obviously that is not how this game is played. Most people won't notice the great sounds of this game. A pity, since they are beautifully done.
Challenge: 70%
The major challenge of this game is gain experience. Since so much time is spent on this aspect of the game, it can be quite challenging initially, but then gets easier in each area.
Of course, there is that mountain that is not mentioned in the game at all, which would have been nice to have found if I knew I was searching for a mountain. That would be a challenge. Instead I had to find out about it on my own, which I found quite annoying since I spent an entire day walking back and forth between towns trying to find out how I could find a way to the Tower of Gods. The game is not that challenging since there is not too much to it. Of course, it can be fun, which is why I still play it.
Satisfaction/Fun: 75%
For all this game's faults, it is still fun to play. Talking to people can be fun because there are some surprising bits of conversation. It keeps the game light. Also, you will find the game play somewhat unexciting, but you will keep playing because you want to know what it is that is in Spear's head! Of course, I do get somewhat frustrated with the controls, but then again the game was not made for a fast computer. It should have been though. B-(
Overall: 74.75%
Overall, I like this game. It is a finished RPG (something we don't see too much of!), and it is decent for that. I found it a little entertaining, although not that much. I suggest it because it will be a classic in the QBasic RPG genre.
