| Drive your car around a track while avoiding mines and other obstacles! | |
| I know what some of you are thinking. Why did you give it such high marks? Well, from looking over his other projects at his site, I found that this is not a professional work. This is a newbie's work, and for that, it is decent. Imagine the possiblities with this game! Basically, you move around the track. There is no race as there are no opponents nor is there a timne limit. You can crash into the walls (although how you would avoid them I don't know) and also end up hitting obstacles. There is a power up in the game that increases your speed. Unfortunately, there is no real need for it except to allow you to finish this game faster. This game is not what it was hyped up to be. | |
| The graphics used are GIFS, but they are used terribly. Of course a lot of games don't use them, and
they usually have decent graphics anyway. The track is shown in an overhead view. You can barely tell
what the walls are as opposed to the start/finish line, so it is confusing at first exactly what you are
supposed to do. They are basically lines. The intro is pretty good, although rough looking, but the
actual game is terrible. More work was spent on making the cut-scenes than making the game itself.
A big no-no with any game design. Movies are nice only if they help the game along. Make a game,
not a movie! Basically, the graphics need work.
| Well, I can say that the controls are simple. Move around the track. You can't press more
than one key because I think the code is basically INKEY$. That is it. You can't possibly hit the obstacles unless you do it on purpose, and the only reason to do so would be to see the animation that ensues. Not much to see anyway (see the Graphics rating). I give this a 50% because it is easy to use, although it can't help a bad game. The design needs to be worked out before the controls should be a worry.
| No sound. Wouldn't help this game anyway and it might also have hurt it if there was any. It would just be ear candy. | |
| Initial challenge: What do I do? You have to figure out what is meant by going around the
track. I will tell you here. Go towards the right, then down, then left, then up.
When you reach the top, try to go to the right. You won't hit the wall, cause, lo and behold!
it isn't a wall at all! It is the finish line! The color of it is only slightly different than the
wall. Not enough to differentiate. There was no indication that I had to do that, so I had to
figure it out on my own. The point of the game is not a good thing to have to figure out. Some kind of indication like a finish line banner or even an arrow pointing in the right direction would help. After that: there is no challenge! None! Go around, avoiding the obstacles, and crossing the line is basically that. You can do it with no concentration at all! And you can take as long as you want since there is no indication that this is a race at all. No opponent, no reason you would hit the obstacles, no timer. Nothing.
| I think the fun thing about this was just to stop looking at the bad things and trying to see if the good things are done well. Well, they aren't that great anyway, but some things aren't THAT bad. For example, the power up. You car speeds up. Excellent thingm, that speed. Much faster, and it allows you to complete the race faster so you can stop playing sooner. I don't mean to be so harsh, but I am being honest. It is actually a good thing in this game. | |
| Well, this game has potential, for all of its flaws are not permanent. With the right
creativity and time and effort, this game could be a big hit. Imagine an actual race around these tracks,
with AI or even 2 player modes. You can even race against the clock in Time Trial. Moving obstacles,
better graphics, sound, maybe some music, and acceleration would make this game outstanding.
Unfortunately, it was not made that way, but we hope that someone will be able to. I would not recommend this game unless you want to see some ideas.
