| Basically, this is one versus one soccer. Just two men, a ball, and the goals... | |
| This game is simply supposed to be a demo. It is playable, but there are things that are noticeably missing. When you start the program, you are already in the middle of the field. There is no key to kick the ball, so it is a matter of pushing it forward. It is clearly a tile based engine, but for what it is, I suppose it is dealt alright. The problem is that it is soccer, but this game turns it into some kind of tag game, where the AI chases you if you have the ball, or you chase the AI if he has it. Goals are simply scored by pushing the ball into the net area. How to make it more interesting? Well, instead of letting the game offer a formal options screen, you will have to do it manually through the .ini file. I found it too much to ask someone to exit the program and change the configuration in that way in order to play it a different way. Why? Well, imagine if you had to do that in order to change the difficulty of a professional game like Quake III or something like that...how many errors could occur simply because you typed the info incorrectly? Besides the method to get to the options, the options themselves are nice. You can change the name of the two players, determine whether or not the second player is computer or human, the speed of the AI, and the number of goals until a winner is determined. I would have enjoyed this more if it was more complete. Of course, this is simply a demo, but unless there is a more completed version of this somewhere, then this is the game I have to review. Plusses are the source code provided and the simple readme.txt file. |

| While the background looks pretty nice, the playing field is not very detailed since it is basically grass. The borders of the field are clearly set, and the nets are nicely drawn. The two players are not animated, but they do not look too bad. The ball is a simple circle, but there is no real difference in the level of detail anywhere. The fonts on the left side contrast with the rest of the screen, but they are different from the default text. What would have been nice to see is some kind of animation, but the graphics do their role decently. When a goal is scored, there is no question about it, since a nice "GOOOOOAL!!!!" appears on the screen. Also, there is an "effectful" ending, which is basically a palette fade, but it still looks nice. | |
| If it is only one player, then simply use the arrow keys. If the second player is human, then 1st player uses the arrows while the 2nd uses the WSAD keys. It would have been nice to be able to configure the controls, but at least it is designed with the idea that two people will have to use the keyboard at the same time. The controls never really are complicated, but there is never any lag or trouble. | |
| The only sound that I occurred was the ending theme music...which was annoyingly played on the internal PC speaker. Other than that, there was no sound. | |
| Well, the default game is very simple...you can almost always win by pressing up constantly. Once you change the .ini file though, it can get downright hard. It is more fun this way I find, and you will actually find yourself beat by the computer because you did not react fast enough, just like in real soccer! If anything, this saves the game. Too bad it is not easier to change the settings. | |
| When I originally played this game, I thought that it was boring. It was a nice-try-but-no-cigar kind of game. Then I found out how to change the .ini file to make it more challenging, as well as changing the default name in the game ("Big Daddy"? Uh uh). Now I had to actually earn my goals, and the controls are never in the way, so I can concentrate on playing instead of on moving. I think it would be more fun with more people, like most sports games would be, and the design needs work to be more like real soccer, but I enjoyed this game to an extent. | |
| If this game could be more complete, with an options and configurations menu or something, as well as include more "soccer-type" music, it would create a nicely playable game. I would have loved to have been able to kick the ball, or have some other quirks, but the frenzy that a fast AI creates is enough to keep this game going. In general, I would suggest this game to people who like challenging key pressing games, but it is not all that. | |
