Super Sumo

by Michael Dowling of Typosoft

The sequel to the amazing Sumo is here and bigger than ever!

Premise
Same as before, but this time you get more characters and more fun!
Game Design: 90%
This game took what was in the first and made it slightly better. All of the options are still available, plus more, like the cheat modes and the multitude of characters. You still have to push your opponents out of the circle, but it is a lot harder to run around. The ultimate strategy has been to keep pushing the space bar!
Now the option to pick your special move is available! Instead of some random event happening, you actually get to pick from six different moves to pull. This really increases the playability of this game!
The engine stays pretty much the same from the original, so there aren't too many new ways to play it.
Graphics: 95%
Still the same amazing graphics from before. Not much has changed, and the background is still the same. The only real difference is in the number of special moves being animated along with the new characters. The victory dances are kind of a nice touch too!
Play Control: 80%
This game still has you pressing the space bar frantically, but now you get to choose your special moves. It is kind of unintuitive though, since you have to press the numbers one through six, but it is still nice to give power to the people. I would have liked a better interface though. There is joystick support, so that is cool too. I found it kind of hard to use on my controller, since QB games seem to think that I am continually pressing a certain direction when I am not.
Sound: 95%
This game also capitalizes on its great music by providing some really great sound tracks. You can play to some really cool sounds, and the sound effects are much more pronounced in this version. You can actually hear the judge at the beginning of the match this time. Really well done!
Challenge: 80%
This game is slightly more challenging than the original. It seems that speed does not factor into it as much, so you cannot run away easily. If the sumo is stronger than you, then you are more likely going to lose unless you can hold out until a special move is available. There are more attribute points that can affect this game so it can be sometimes seem overwhelmingly tough, but for the most part, this game provides a great challenge.
Satisfaction/Fun: 90%
This game is really fun, but there are some things that I miss from the original. I liked being able to run circles around the AI, but it seems like I cannot do that this time, or at least do it well. The multiple characters available are great, along with the multiple special moves. It is too bad that the game still comes down to mashing the space bar. Some more strategy would be nice.
Overall: 88.75%
Now with all of the characters available, all we need is some kind of story for each of them, ala Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat. Super Sumo 2 perhaps? A great looking game with easy controls. I demand (not suggest) that you try this one now. Even at 2.28MB, it will be worth it!
