Tetsuyu

An adventure to phone home?

Story
You are Tetsuyu, A young boy who was born into the ancient mythical world of Maisy. 10 years ago Maisy was a thriving world where everyone got on and it was ruled by a great king called Retst. He was your Father. However 2 years later the horrible Magician Hort and his son Min arrived and took over the thrown. They encased your father in a Mystical substance called Freidium and stored him in a cave miles underground. The people of Maisy were very distressed and looked for a Leader. The great Man Betsui fell from the skies to help us and managed to eliminate Hort. He was then killed viciously by Min and the people were even more distressed. Min got angry and tried to kill everyone. Few survived and who did fled to the hills. You hid in your secret house waiting for the Army from above to come down and save you.
Game Design: 60%
The game works by telling you where you are, how your surroundings are like, and then presenting you with some choices about where to go or what to do. In itself, this is a very good way to get the game to the player. Unfortunately, it is not obvious how dangerous moving around this world can be. One movement in the wrong direction can sometimes end with your death, which could have been done better. I didn't like how the game exited when you died. Every time you start the game, you have to reenter your name, so it can get kind of tedious to play.
What made it worse was the actual design of the different areas. While it may seem that the status of the different rooms depend on different variables, it turns out that if you backtrack manually to a room which you can teleport to, it is not the same room. In this game, there is a phone, and you do not know the number. If you find the number, then return to the phone, you still can't dial, but if you teleport, you can.
It is also a small world, and even though it is called v1.01 it is in beta.
The design could have been better, but for the small demo it was it seemed to do well. Some small improvements, such as actually being able to change the status of certain rooms, would have added to the game greatly.
Play Control: 80%
While this might not seem too important, it does add greatly to the enjoyment of the game. Instead of having to press a choice and then enter, I could just press the number corresponding to the choice. While it did provide a game in which my actions were limited, the way it was implemented made the game less of a hassle to work with.
Sound: 20%
The only sound comes from the PC Speaker, and only at the end of the game when you finally find your way to the end and win. Besides that, the game is silent.
Challenge: 40%
This game was a matter of trial and error really. You find out quickly that there is really only one path to follow in order to win. This made the game slightly irritating in the sense that I wasn't really given a variety of choices. It was either the right way or the wrong way, and the wrong way results in you having to restart the game.
Satisfaction/Fun: 50%
To be honest, I liked the initial story and I thought that it was going to be more involved. The game really lacked in some areas, and the story was not really developed as you played. Sometimes events occurred and you had no choice but to lose.
Overall: 52.00%
It was a nice try, but it could have been better designed. Some more foresight and maybe some more implementation of the story would have made this game more enjoyable.
If anything, this program comes with some of Keiko's older work when he was known as CraigQBasic so you can try some of those other programs as well.
